Awoke early, as excited to watch the replay of Beau's trial. Was slightly impressive - heading straight to racing headquarters (flemington) to run down the straight on 13 September. Couldn't be prouder!
Coffee, then to the station to head out to Postdam. An area in West Berlin famous for being the play ground of the wealthy Prussians. The plan was to hire bikes and take a leisurely ride around the picturesque parks and river. The guy at the bike shop, showed us the suggested cycle route - pointing out the highlights. Unfortunately I have never heard anyone speak quicker and as hae waved us goodbye I was thankful I had my trusty surveyor on hand to safely guide us around. The planned route was 20kms - the unplanned route we ended up taking was more like 40kms. Everything started off idyllic. A cleansing ale in a quaint street, gentle cycling through gardens hedged to within an inch of their lives, then down to the river for lunch. The word light and lunch can never be found in the same sentence in Germany. Pork knuckle, potatoes and sauerkraut plus a complimentary ale. I ate for 30 minutes and my knuckle still looked like it had a small pig attached to it:) Then came the fatal error. Poor John - he was so close to getting it right. If only he had the map the right way up when we left the cafe after lunch, things could have been so much happier. If stopped being fun when we were alternating riding between busy highways and cobblestone paths that must surely be responsible for the sterility of half the male population in Postdam. At last, shell shocked at the growing certainty that he had taken a wrong turn, John asked for help. It seems that we were about 10kms along in completely the wrong direction. We retraced our steps and after an hour of riding, ended back at the place we had been for lunch :) this time we turned left instead of right and life was looking a lot brighter.
By the time we got back to the bike shop, we had been riding for close on 5 hours and the jury is out as to which body part will ache more but be assured I will be asking for it to be massaged:)
All in all though it was a wonderful adventure - magic part of the world. I just need to make sure I book John into therapy when we get to Prague as he is in denial regarding the upside down map episode:)
PS. We saved a dollar on the bikes by using our amazing Berlin card - John has tossed it and vowed never to get 'had' again!
