October 23
Long driving day. Just before leaving the campsite, we realized that our tires were a bit low in air so we stopped at the campground gas station to pump them up. Unfortunately all that did was let air OUT of the tires. So we drove 30 miles into the park to the gas station at the other Big Bend exit. The hose for the air pump wouldn't come out of the dispenser. Fortunately a very helpful gas station attendent and Kevin took the machine apart and were able to finally add the appropriate amount of air.
After driving another 6 hours of the 8 required to get to Austin, we stumbled across the german hamlet of Fredericksburg. This town had numerous restaurants and shopping and was also close to a number of outdoor activities so we decided to stay here for a number of nights.
Ah, Civilization again!!

We drove east to Pedernales State Park. A short hike down to the Pedernales Falls provided a cornucopia of scenic views and short waterfalls, as well as plenty of opportunity for scrambling and bouldering. We spent the afternoon here before heading back into town for some shopping.
