Puno/Lake Titcaca
We travelled to Puno for the sole purpose of visiting Lake Titicaca,
the highest (and one of the biggest) lakes in the world. The town of
Puno itself is situated on the shore and doesn´t offer much in its own
right.
We spent two days and one night on the lake. On day one we
visited the floating island of Uros, an artificial island where
everything (boats, chairs, houses and the island itself) are made from
the rushes that grow in the lake. From there we spent 3 hours
travelling out to the center of the lake to the island of Amantani,
one of the quieter inhabited islands. We spent the niight here with a
local family. After watching the sun set over the lake from the peak
of the island we went to a dance in the local hall. We had to dress up
in the traditional attire for this (see pics for details). I only had
to wear a poncho while Kerry had to wear 3 skirts and 2 layers on top.
I have to say it was great fun. I´ve seen so many stars in the sky as
in the middle of the lake it was so clear. The next day we returned
to Puno by boat. Life on the islands seems very simple but all the
people seemed quite content. Definetly a unique life experience!
