Our first visit to Lima was a short one en route to Cusco. We got in off a flight to LA a bit weary of what to expect in South America. However 5 minutes into our taxi ride we were at ease as we got a rundown on the history of Peru from our driver. We were staying in a lovely area by the coast called Miraflores. Our first visit was only for one day so we decided to focus on Miraflores and walked along the coast for the day, watching the surfers and the paragliders.
We went out that night and were treated to a public display of salza dancing in the bar we were in. Just normal people out dancing but in a much more stylish way than at home!
Our 2nd time in Lima gave us enough time to visit the city centre. The main square, Plaza de Armes (yes every city has one) is very grand with La Catedral dominating. In here we saw the remains of the infamous Francisco Pizarro. From there we went to the very strange San Francisco church which houses a crypt and catacombs underneath. The skulls and bones of 70,000 people are on display here in mass graves. The rest of our time in Lima was spent visiting musuems and wandering around Miraflores. Lots of people say Lima is only worth a day stop over but we thought it was a really vibrant place and had a good time there.
