We woke up to a rainy day in Mt Gambier...where we needed to do some washing! But with that out of the way, we toured around the city starting at the Blue Lake lookout. Unfortunately we are visiting at the wrong time of year for the lake to be really blue, but it was still pretty. We managed to just make it for the last Aquifer tour of the day (leaving at 12 noon) which took us to the pump station and then down in a glass paneled elevator to the pumps at the side...

We called into the visitor information centre in Naracoorte this morning to get some directions to the caves which are just outside of the town. The guy there was very helpful and gave us some information about the coastal towns south of Mt Gambier so that will be helpful in a couple of days. The road from Tailem Bend south to Kingston hugged the coastline and passed through 'The Coorong' which included some beautiful beach areas with massive sand dunes and lots of bird life. There are two inland lakes where the Murray River meets the ocean and it was a lovely mix of farmland and coastline. We made it to Kingston just before midday and had our first stop at a park where there is a sundial you stand in to make it work! After lunch we took a drive along...

We started the morning in Kapunda feeding ducks at the park and then did the historic drive route around town. Kapunda is notable for a few things: being the oldest copper mining town in Australia; having strong links to Sir Sidney Kidman with one of his homes here; and being the town of Fisher in the TV series McLeod's Daughters. It was a good drive, but a bit too long - there's only so many houses with "wrought iron lace work typical of the area" you can take!...

From Pimba we drove to Port Augusta - Hello Civilisation!!! It was cold, and wet....something we hadn't experienced for a while! So we left fairly quickly and continued south to Port Germaine. Here we were confused by their claim of having "the longest wooden jetty in Australia" because we had visited "the longest wooden jetty in Australia" a few years ago at Busselton in WA!
