We woke up to a rainy day in Mt Gambier...where we needed to do some washing! But with that out of the way, we toured around the city starting at the Blue Lake lookout. Unfortunately we are visiting at the wrong time of year for the lake to be really blue, but it was still pretty. We managed to just make it for the last Aquifer tour of the day (leaving at 12 noon) which took us to the pump station and then down in a glass paneled elevator to the pumps at the side of the lake. Our guide had heaps of information and it was hard to take it in, but was all very interesting. From there we drove to the Umpherstone Sinkhole which was really cool and made it to the shelter at the bottom before a heavy shower of rain came through. We also spotted a possum in the cave there, probably coming out to eat Callen's sandwich! The scale of the gardens was awesome and we could imagine how beautiful if would look in spring or summer with all the flowers out. It was then into town to see the Cave Garden in the centre of the city - and all the storm water flowing through made spectacular waterfalls. The sun came out while we were there too, just long enough to dry us out a little! We grabbed some groceries then headed south to Port MacDonnell and drove along the coastline a little way stopping at a couple of lookouts before sunset. It is spectacular coastal scenery and we can't wait to see what the Great Ocean Road will be like.
