Today we woke up to a rainy morning but we decided to catch a yellow taxi to Pier 78 to take a sightseeing cruise which was included as part of our CitySights tickets. When we got there, we found that we would have to wait over an hour so we decided to pass the time by visiting the Intrepid Museum next door. This is the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Intrepid which is docked in the Hudson and contains a great collection of historic aircraft and other displays. We also toured through an early cold war submarine, USS Growler, which was one of the first to be armed with nuclear missiles and we had a close look at a Concorde airliner on the pier.
By this time a few hours had passed, but we eventually made it on to the CitySights boat which took us on a 90 minute cruise from the Hudson River around to the third bridge up the East River past the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges. While on the boat there was a massive thunderstorm, the build-up to which provided some amazing lighting effects. The storm cleared by the time we sailed across to the Statue of Liberty and we had a great view from the boat.
Afterwards, we headed home and found a nice place to eat at the Amsterdam Ale House.
