Today is Fraser Island day!! Woke about 7am for a quick breakie before a 7.30am pick up by bus.
We made our way to River Head and boarded the barge which would drop us at Fraser. It was damn cold, Carol had foresight to bring jacket, not me though.
We were told find a man in a red vest when we reached Fraser and we did, Jon was his name. Really nice guy with really bad jokes.
We got on our 52 seater 4 wheel drive (4wd are all that's allowed on Fraser) - this thing was fairly colossal.
Our first stop was central station (sounds amazing and busy but it was an old settlement from years ago) where Jon thought us about different trees and history of Fraser.
After our talk we bush walked through rain forest (not at a very quick pace due to the older people on the trip..one guy seated in front of us actually put on a neck brace when we started driving on the island! - don't think him or his wife realised what they signed up to!) and again after more talks about trees and some questions, we were in our way to start real Fraser! 75 mile beach which is actually now only 58 mike long! The speed limit on the beach is 80 kmph. There's something very surreal about driving down a beach at this pace with fishermen and waves one side and cars doing the same speed on the other! I didn't give a damn I was loving this!
We stopped off in the beach at a place called Eli Creek, we walked along the creek on a boardwalk and then walked back through the creek - it was about knee high at it's highest, although one French dude succeeded in falling in! Comical!
Our next stop was the ship wreck of the Mahena - a ship which ran aground on Fraser in 1935. Once we took our pics with that, Jon passed around pics of when it ran aground, its amazing the amount of sand which had lodged since - we were literally at deck height of the ship!
We the visited the Pinnacles - a cliff face made of different colour sands. Only OK! We then got option to fly over Fraser in a light air craft. We weren't really interested but a few ppl on the tour did it and enjoyed it.
We then drove about 30 mins down beach to Eurong beach resort where we would have our 'BBQ lunch' - only problem was it was more of a salad buffet with a few chicken drum sticks. BBQ my arse. I was quite dissappointed.
After lunch we drove to Lake Mackenzie - an 11km drive which took 45 minutes (because Fraser is a sand Island with sand roads!).
We reached the lake which was amazing in itself but more amazing because it is a fresh water lake in the middle of a sand Island surrounded by Salt water. We took a swim in the lake (which is apparent good for exfoliating as water is very acidic..) and took some silly pics, including a jumping one which we got an old couple from Canberra to also do! They thought we were a bit mental!
We got the same barge back and over a beer we got chatting to an Irish couple from Kerry who planned to drive 7500km in 18 days! We though we were and driving 3000km in 21 days! Good luck to them ;-)
Once we got back to site we took a walk on esplanade looking for place to eat and decided on Indian! Was delicious and not too expensive!
Got back to van and fell asleep while having a night cap..short drive tomorrow to Noosa where we would spend a day before hitting Australia Zoo and maybe Brisbane! We haven't decided yet..
