Left Oamaru at lunchtime, the bus was really crowded - it was a Friday that the kids broke up from school. So had to sit next to a stinky man who snored. Yuk. The majority of the buses i've been on so far across NZ have been really quiet with a few seats to yourself. It was only a shortish journey and arrived in Dunedin 2pm-ish. But... it was really rainy and FREEZING cold. Brrrr. Checked into a hostel which was nice (but had a cat-beast who lived on top of the TV..) and had a wander around and had to buy gloves. As it was chilly and raining sat in a pub with a pint perusing brochures - hmmmm, do i do a brewery tour or Cadbury tour first... To warm myself up and celebrate i treated myself to a curry (as Tony had finally been sold - thanks dad!) and I was the only one in the curry house.
First proper day in Dunedin i got up leisurely, it was still freezing cold. Had a yummy fry up, then headed to Speights for the beer tour at 4pm. It was quite an interesting tour seeing the brewery workings. There was even a couple getting married there that day (weird venue...) then the last half an hour was a free for all pulling your own samples of their range (necking as much as you can whilst looking as though you were appreciating the subtleties of each...). My favourite was Distinction - a nice ale. So in summary i had a fry up and drank beer. Good day.
Spent Sunday in Dunedin and didn't achieve much. The weather had turned really nice, so sat sunbathing in the centre. Weird how it went from freezing cold with 4 layers, gloves and hat, to next day just a t-shirt. The noteable memory of that day was buying some out of date baby carrots, the last of which tasted a little odd and made my tongue numb. Odd.
The next day (Monday 21st) I was booked onto the Cadbury factory tour at 9.30am (at the weekend they only did a half tour so stayed longer in Dunedin to go on the full tour - how sad!). But it was a really informative tour, you got to see the factory, they made these 12.5kg huge blocks of choc for the catering trade to melt down again, and saw loads of buttons being plopped out. Also got freebies along the way. Mmmm. I even found the warehouse bit quite interesting, thinking it was very similar to a Currys warehouse but with more interesting products! Then we went into the purple tower and saw 1 ton of chocolate fall in a waterfall. Mmmmm.
In summary:
Dunedin - beer and chocolate. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.
