Fraser Island was amazing and so stunning, but first we stayed in Rainbow beach for two nights, there is not a lot to do there but surf and surf, the little town has about three shops and that is it, so yes it is a very boring little place but its is honestly just a stopping place before heading to Fraser. The first night we stayed in a caravan park and just watched a movie on our little cinema and then woke up really early the next day to feed some wild dolphins, yes that is exactly what I did, and it was so amazing seeing them and then getting to put a smelly little fish in their mouth, luckily that day there wasn't loads of people and we could actually spend some time there and watch them swim around us. We were not aloud to touch them unless they came up to us, there were just two there that day, father and baby and these were a fourth generation family coming to get fed. It is such a magical thing seeing them in the wild like that and I was so excited.
The second night in rainbow we stayed in the backpackers Dingo's where our group for the tour would be staying and we also had to get the most boring briefing, but its all safety talks and do's and don'ts on the island, as last year a group of people from another part of the island flipped their 4x4 and two backpackers got killed, but don't worry we were all fine in the end, other than my finger being really swollen after getting bitten by something. Our group was lovely, their were eleven of us and it was a nice mix of people too as we had two Canadian girls, two Irish lads, two American girls, a German couple, one Danish guy and of course and most importantly US. Frasier Island is the biggest sand island in the world and has a rainforest and lakes, and of course lots and lots of Dingo's.
The first day we took a ferry over with the five other 4x4's from our backpackers and headed to Lake Mackenzie which is just stunning, it looks like a beach as the sand is white beach sand and the water is blue and amazing, it was going to be our only 'bath' of the three days on the island so we so we spent loads of time soaking it up. The drive over was so bumpy and it is so hard trying to drive in soft sand, Darren drove so I sat in the back and got happily drunk with the others, I for one was not putting my name down as a driver, imagine the grief I would get if I got stuck and we were told that everyone gets stuck… a lot, and besides I wanted to have fun and not have the responsibility, so anyway the first drive to the lake was so bumpy and crazy and we did get stuck a few time and all had to jump out and push, it was funny though. After setting up camp and making a slap dash dinner we all set about playing drinking games and just having so much fun, I was on the Goon and decided it was a good idea to eat sand with Jimmy, please don't ask why but I insisted and have photos to prove it. The night ended in a blur and we all stumbled into our sleeping bags along with sand, which got in everything and I mean bloody everything.
The second day we were up early, had breakfast and a beer, yes I am serious we started drinking at 8 am in the morning and then headed to a ship wreck that was stranded on the beach, it was really massive and was such a great thing to see, we then went up to Indian head which was a cliff that you could look down into the ocean and spot some wild life, we were really lucky and saw a pod of dolphins, a shark and some other fish type things, the views of the island was stunning, the only thing I would recommend is taking shoes up because none of us did and the sand gets so hot it is literally like walking on fire….I have blisters to prove it too! We then went to camp early set ourselves up and took a walk down the beach to a little swimming area, where fresh water meets the sea, and inevitably we started drinking again, this time five other 4x4 joined us and we had a massive party, it was great fun, until of course the morning when we woke up stiff as boards as we were not given mattresses just sleeping bags and a tent so even though the sand is soft it is actually so hard to sleep on, and the goon hangover took over again!! Our last day was a pretty chilled out day, we went to another lake for a swim and then headed back to Rainbow beach.
We met some ace people and Fraser island is just stunning, it is such a fun trip to go on and the experiences and the actual drives on the beach cant be explained on paper but I will carry the memories with me forever.
It is my birthday soon so a lot of the people I have met along the way are meeting me in Brisbane to celebrate so I cant wait to have a reunion and some more partying, I recon I am going to spoil myself and buy 'nice' alcohol for a change the Goon gets a bit much at times I tell you.
Our next stop is Bli Bli where Darren's brother and his family live so we are both so excited to get there and it will be my first time meeting them.
As always enjoy and take care xxx
