Today was solely for sampling this region's finest vintages and to say we were excited is an understatement. We booked an Easy Rider tour with our hostel and 10.30am set off in a mini bus with 3, as it turned out, boring Germans. They confirmed their status when they actually spat their wine at one vineyard!
We visited four vineyards today:
- Simonsig
- Fairview
- Dieu Donne
- Tokara
After Fairview we stopped in Franschhoek for lunch. By this point I also decided that a coffee was in order. Drinking lots of effectively shots of wine actually makes you a rather sleepy.
We had an average of 5 wines at each vineyard and thankfully got to choose our own wines so I was able to stick to white and bubbles. Hopefully one day my taste buds will mature into red wine, but until then it was lovely not to have to choke it down. We also got to sample cheese at Fairview that was delicious. The price of the wine at the cellar door was spectacularly low and despite us travelling in an overstuffed tissue box, we decided that it would be criminal not to purchase a few bottles - we could worry about storage later.
At 5pm when we rolled back into our hostel we were rather merry. We decided that it would be best to sample some of our purchases and so had a fun evening of further wine and cheese tasting. What a great way to spend a day and night.
