Last night there was a heavy storm. We woke up and watched the lightening and can hear the waves crashing below. Our hut kept us dry but our walking shoes got soaked as we left them on the porch.
The breakfast drum was a little later than planned at 8am, we had coconut pancakes and fruit and a much needed coffee. We checked that our reef snorkelling was still happening and went back at 9am ready to offshore reef snorkel. We went with our guides Saki and Josh and two other German guests Hendrick and a new guy.
We took the speedboat 20minutes towards the mainland were we stopped in the middle of the ocean. Josh guided us through the reef as we all swam together watching him catch fish using different techniques, spearing and cross bowing, I don't know how he held his breathe so long each time he dived into the nooks of the reef. It was like swimming in an aquarium, we got to see reef sharks and lots of other colourful fish. It seemed like a successful day of fishing for Josh catching some smaller dark fish, a polka dot fish with big lips and a big blue/silver fish.
Once back to our island we thanked the guides 'Vinaka' and dried off by the hut and i cleaned off our muddy boots. We went and had a coffee and I read in the sun.
Lunch came around quickly and we had a fried egg in a cakey bun with tomato and onion and a side of pasta. So many carbs to finish but a good lunch to prepare for our kayaking afternoon.
We kayaked out towards the other island and back again. I collected some phallic shaped coral off the beach and then showered to get ready for dinner.
Tonight was a traditional Fijian night. There was a kava ceremony and all the food was prepared in the underground oven. Before we ate we all had a cup of kava. We sat on the floor and ate with our hands while being serenaded by the staff. For dinner was the fish Josh our guide had caught that morning, chicken, root vegetables, spinach and fruit. The fish was beautiful and was served with fresh coconut milk.
After dinner we were offered more kava, I had a couple of small cups and but stuck with the Island Sunrises that Moses was making me at the bar. It was a lovely night of Fijian songs and our latest night jn Fiji yet.
