S: After another long drive, we stopped in a little truck stop. (Mel and Yuri are becoming pros at sleeping in laybys lol). But in the morning we were rewarded with breakfast by the sea. What a
beautiful view...... It was a little windy but breath-taking. The first stop once over the bridge to Phillip Island was the Koala Sanctuary. They had started a reserve here to try and stop the koalas from dying out. It was brilliant seeing them in their natural habitats and we even saw one move. A rare thing for these animals that sleep for around 20 hours a day.
J: We found out that the Moto-GP circuit on Phillip Island had a scaled version Go-kart circuit also! Obviously it was our next destination. It was an amazing track with great corners to throw the karts around. Mel hadn't been on karts before but after the first couple laps she got her confidence and we were all zooming around. Oh and I got the fastest lap between us. But my highlight was when I was battling Sam. She was being a pain to get past as she had faster acceleration out the corners, keeping me and another racer behind her. We were both trying to past then the other guy got in front of me, but rather close to Sam, she thought it was me and gave him a "don't hit me" finger gesture. As we finished the race she realised it wasn't me at all and was apologetic lol.
We then headed to Seal Island as the winner got to pick the lunch location and that's where I wanted to go, we had a stunning view out to sea and then used the telescope to view the seals too. We did the board walk along the cliff edge which was beautiful.
Afterwards we tried to find a ship wreck in a bay but the tide wasn't out far enough so we walked along looking for life in all the volcanic rock pools.
S: Now the real reason we came to Phillip Island was to see the Penguins. Although I didn't realise they only came to shore at night time. So we all decided that James that would do the night driving again (he's a good boy!!) and we would get along the coast as much as possible. So we arrived in plenty of time, watched a film and read all the info. Then we ventured down towards the beach, it was freezing, and we still had over an hour to wait. Although a friendly seal came to play in front of us. He obviously didn't want to miss out on the action or his tea as he was catching fish in front of us. Then just as it was getting dark, we saw the first black dots in the water. We were all excited and then just as soon as we saw them they disappeared in the waves. Next thing they are on the beach these tiny penguins waddling up the sand to their burrows. They were so cute to watch; we must have seen at least 1000. James was freezing so we all walked back to the van via the burrows and watched the Penguins return to their young. The noise they made though to get back to their young was kinda like a duck with a problem lol. Such an amazing thing and to think Australia has Penguins??
