It's been a while since we updated our blog and it's not because we've stopped doing new things, but probably because we haven't really done anything that I felt was worth writting about. This weekend was another typical weekend of getting out and exploring London, but I think this weekend really summed up what I love about living in London, and I thought was worth writting about.
The weekend started with an impromtu drinking session on Friday night. What was supposed to be a quiet dinner at the local Asian restaurant 'Friends' (THE best asian I've found in London by the way) turned into 5 of us have a few pre-dinner vodkas....... ok we drank the whole bottle, a few beers at dinner and then Kristina and I finished the evening with a bottle of Moet at one of the many local pubs. So as you can imagine we were feeling a bit sluggish when Saturday morning rolled around.
Most of Saturday (a shopping trip to Kingston) passed in a hazy hungover fog.
After a recharging nap we rugged up in all our winter woolies and headed to Battersea Park for the Guy Fawkes celebrations. A giant bonfire and fireworks. The celbrations date back to 1605 when a group of Catholics attempted to Blow up the houses of parliament and the Protasent King James. They failed, the ring leader was tourtered, hung, drawn and quatered and King James ordered a big celebration!!! Whilst watching the fireworks I began to think how 'London' this was. Standing out in the cold, with people hugging mugs of mulled wine, surounded by autumn trees watching a fireworks sepctacular. The fireworks were set to music, each new song and fireworks show evoking a new set of emotions. This is how fireworks should be done!
Sunday afternoon found us heading to Spitafileds Markets, wandering up Brick Lane (famous througout London for it's indian restaurants) we stubbled across a big cobblestone courtyard, surrounded by trees and a high wrot iron fence. The courtyard was filled with picnic benches and at one end was a pie and crepe stall at the other a burger and sausage stall. We opted for the tradional pie, mash and musy peas and had some of the best pies we've ever had, mint lamb, thai chicken and goats cheese and vegetables all washed down with a what seems to be a London winter Must - mulled wine. Delicious.
Latley I've been telling everyone how much I love living in London, and I guess it's because of weekends like this. Just an ordinary weekend in London but still a weekend full of new expereinces and new places. Even as the weather is getting cooler and the days getting shorter we are spoilt for choice when it comes to deciding how to spend our free time. I'm sure eventually the novelty will wear off and our craving for a decent cafe style breakfast and the desire to be able to buy a coffee or eat in a restaurant that isn't part of a chain will see us packing our bags and heading home, but for the moment we're have a great time expereince all that London and this half of the world has to offer.
