So, We've finally made it to London, England. But before we get into that, the last few days in Bangkok need to be talked about.
Our last couple of days in the city of stink (harsh but true) included a river cruise to see What Pho - The Reclining Buddha. It was pretty spectacular (see photos in Album) 46m Long 15m High Gold Leaf Buddha. Hard not to be impressed really.
A wander around the adjoining buildings saw us pretty much templed out, we know we know there are so many more amazing old buildings to see in Bangkok, but to be honest we just couldn't be bothered. It was hot and smelly and I really wanted another Super Deluxe Thai Massage.
For our last night in Bangkok, Annie and Matt took us to the Banya Tree Bar.Everyone who's been to Bangkok or read a Lonley Planet Book on Thailand will know what this is, but for the rest of you it's a slightly posh roof top bar giving the best views of Bangkok. Lucky for us the rain held off (the bar is open to the elements so closes if it rains) and although it was pretty windy we had the most expensive drinks in Bangkok and enjoyed the view. Now we should clarify the expensive drink part.In actual fact Karla's Cosmo's only cost $12 each, but that was about 3 times the price we'd been paying all week!
Dinner and a walk through Phat Phong (?spelling) with the obligatory offer of seeing a ping pong show saw our last night in Bangkok out quiet nicely.
So that brings us to London Town. It's been 2 weeks today since we arrived (yes we're at bit slow at updating this) and things are going pretty well. We spent the first week with our tourist/flat hunters' hats on.We successfully found a flat (Putney), but being a tourist wasn't quiet as successful. We did manage to see a few of the sights (Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Tower of London, London Bridge) but only the ones that lay on the path between the train station and various pubs.
So we've slipped into London life pretty well, with most activities involving the inside of a pub. We've enjoyed sampling some of the local brews, but I'm afraid the European beers still win. What we haven't enjoyed is stupid bar people trying to sell us Fosters when they hear our Australian accent. We've stopped trying to explain that Australians don't actually drink Fosters - they don't seem to get it.
We've also seen our first fox (in the middle of suburbia - quiet bizarre) and more than a few squirrels - cute little critters. Seems a bit odd seeing them run across roads in the middle of built up areas, but there you go.
So week 2 saw Karla reluctantly go back to the real world and start her first day at work.So far so good.Duncan starts on Monday. We'll still be tourists on the weekend but for now it's back to reality???????
