So today we arranged to volunteer at a local orphanage which also offered free English lessons for the poorer families in the area, we thought we would be able to have a look around, play some games with the children and maybe help out with the English lessons, we were wrong. As soon as we got there we were thrown in the deep end given a class each and told to teach them something! Crazy! Esspecially with barely any resources, a board with no pen and half the class had notebooks and pens! The first lesson was short of disastrous but we made it through and decided to plan something a lot better for after lunch! We went out to a nearest cafe ( which was about 2km away) and on the way back stopped at shop and bought some paper, crayons and board pens to make the lesson a bit easiest, the kids were very happy with this and the next lesson went a lot smoother even tho my class ranged from ages 6 to 20! Some who knew barely any English! Overall it was a difficult but very rewarding experience and I would reccomend cdo to anyone wanting a similar experience. A lot of companies, I've been told will try and exploit children to get money out of tourists for 'volunteering' but here didn't mention it once even tho we could see they were struggling, they were more than grateful for our time, we wish we were around for longer to help out more as some days the children have no teacher if volunteers don't turn up, but as we leave tomorrow unfortunately we couldn't, though we do plan to stay in touch and will recommend I all our friends passing through the area.
