The drive to Siem Reap. Let me start by saying we had an awesome driver. Some roads were paved, about a third of them were not. We encountered afternoon rain, bad*ss cows that ruled the road and every type of bicycle, scooter, farm vehicle and anything else on two or more feet you can imagine.
We haven't talked too much about it, but the poverty here is very real, especially outside of the city and more so in Cambodia. We have seen people and situations that make us count our blessings.
That being said, let me tell you about the rest stop we encountered. Picture this a roadside restaurant, fruit stands, and about 15 children (ranging from 4-12 years) hustling fruit and drinks. These children manage to be funny, sweet and aggressive salespeople. They are tapping on the car window and following you to the bathroom and any place else you may be. The bathroom looked clean but smelled harsh and raw. There were no doors on the stalls and just a hole for your business. I'm sad to say it was too much for me. I'm a spoiled American. I couldn't squat in front of the old lady attendant, with the children shouting right outside. When I came out, they had Malik surrounded, and were pulling out various wares for sell. The finale was when the little girl in charge pulled out her pet tarantula. Yep. A tarantula and asked if we wanted to pet it. Clutch the pearls! That tipped me over the edge. To say that I jumped into the car is an understatement.
We didn't make another stop until we got to the hotel in Siem Reap 5 hours later. I'm such a wimp. Anyone that knows my bladder, knows that my eyes were crossed by the time we got there.
