From redneck women to Michelle Obama, we made our way up through the Appalachian Mountains (the Great Smoky Mountains of North Carolina and Shenandoah National Park in Virginia where we finally saw a bear!) to Washington, District of Colombia oh yah.We probably chose the hottest and most humid day of the year to head out sightseeing but we couldn't miss out on seeing The White House now could we?

We'd heard that Washington DC is surprisingly a bit of a dump with some seriously bad druggie neighbourhoods but it was well worth a visit to see all those iconic buildings and memorials that frequent our TVs.And the centre is actually very smart with lots of funky neighbourhoods and more museums than Mrs Atkinson with her teacher-hat on could ever get enough of.So we took our time exploring the National Mall, the various war memorials (some of them bordering on the OTT-side but then we are in America) and shouting at a library warden who wouldn't let us into the reading room of the fancy library.We even got a glimpse of the entourage of black Lincolns escorting the Obamas and botox-head David Cameron who just happened to be in town at the same time.Definitely starting to feel a world away from the small town territory and natural wilderness of Utah and Wyoming and closer to the city life of home…
