Up into New Hampshire and a scenic drive along the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains. So nice to get away from cities, interstates and people again and back into the mountains and greenery. The one city we did visit up that way was Montpelier in Vermont, the smallest State capital in the country.Very sweet.About as sweet as a tub of Ben & Jerry's…Yes, we went to the factory of Vermont's finest ice cream to see kids feasting on Cookie Dough, Fish Food and Cherry Garcia.I'd have loved to have seen how hyper the kids were after they'd got through the Vermonster - 20 scoops of ice cream, 1 fudge brownie, 4 bananas, 3 cookies, 4 toppings, 4 ladles of hot fudge, whipped cream and marshmallows.Crikey!
But we decided that it was best to make our escape and headed to the fancy ski resort of Stowe and up into the hills where none other than the Von Trapp family of Sound of Music fame located once they'd escaped the Nazis. And you can see why they've chosen that spot in Vermont - it looked just like Austria. We then went on this crazy drive along a narrow winding road through Smugglers Notch on route to the kooky lakeside town of Burlington. There we tried very tasty beers at the equally kooky Magic Hat Brewery and stumbled across the World's Tallest Filing Cabinet in a field.I said it was kooky! Finally, after another solid week in our tent and a particularly wet and soggy night the night before, we glammed it up at a local motel.Oh the luxury of HBO, a clock radio and a coffee machine!
