Great Ocean Road adventure started today!!!!! :D I checked out and met Louise - we were both feeling that our backpacks were too heavy so caught the free city cirlce tram down Flinders Street to the train station! We had to catch the Sydenham train to Tottenham station to get to the Campervan depot. When we arrived the office was jam packed! and they didnt seem to have the best system of dealing with their customers we were waiting a fairly long time! When we eventually got served our details were taken and we got given a dvd showing us how to use our van and showing us around what was to be our home for the next 5 days! :D after signing a few pieces of paper for the inusrance etc we got the kys and were good to go - or so we thought!!!! I was in the drivers seat first, the keys were in the ignition all the seats and mirrors were adjusted but when I turned the keys - we got nothing!!!!! BAD times! The woman from behind the desk bust have thought - "stupid English girls" but she couldn't start it either! We had a flat battery great start! They had to get the jump leads out and then we were good to go! No pressure now Katie don't stall this van that you have never driven before!!!!! It felt great to be driving again and it didn't actually feel that wierd that I was behind the wheel of a van!!!!! We drove along the Western Highway (the M1) to Geelong where we stopped at the Great Ocean Road visitor centre and stocked up on lots of leaflets, we got chatted to by a random centre volunteer called Mary who had a massive coughing fit just before she started talking to us....not sure why I am telling you this but hey it was obviously a memorable moment for me of the day!!! We drove around to the supermarket to stock up for the next five days and then had some "lunch" in the car park because it was 3pm already and we both realised that we were starving!!!!! I forgot to tell you that we have named our van Seymor....the name started because there is an S in the number plate, he is a van so we needed an olde codgery name and because we are going to "see more" in him!!!! :D We were well on our way now to Torquay - the gateway to the great ocean road. All along this coast is supposed to be really good for surfing and we stopped at a place called Bells Beach to admire some surfers! The waves were amazing as were the surfers! Then we drove onto a light house at a place called Airys inlet, jsut before we arrived in Lorne which was going to be our base for the night we drove under the "Great Ocean Road" archway - pretty cool our adventure had really begun! :) at about 5pm just as dusk was hitting we pulled into our campsite in Lorne we were given pitch number 68, right by the river, I reversed us in and we got ourselves hooked up to the electrics! After a wander around Lorne we decided it was time to start cooking. There was a kitcehn at the campsite but hey we had our own cooking stuff and a little gas stove - we wanted to do this porperly so, standing on the step to use the "kitchen" in our boot and with our table attqatched to the side of the van we set about making a spag bol using just the torch to see how the cooking was going! This food tasted AWESOME and I spent the rest of the evning feeling sufficiently full! We made up pur little bed got a cup of tea and broke out the bar of crunchie cadbury's chocloate!!! We had a lovely evening of diary writing, chatting and lots of laughing! There were ducks all over the campsite which Louise befriended as we arrived. The van wasn't actually too cold and we got all snuggled up in our sleeping bags after a pretty hectic - at some times vergin on stressful - but overall brilliant day! Lets hope this is a sign of lots more fun to come! I went to sleep with a smile on my face again! :)
