Kia Ora
In total today I wa travelling for 9 houts and boy did it feel like it! Left Wellington at 7am and arrived at Nelson YHA just before 4pm!
The ferry which I had heard many horror stories about wasn't too bad - to be fair I did snooze for the first 2 hours! Apprently the Cook Straight is notoriously rough and there was a thunder storm last night so it should have been a horrendous crossing but I guess I got lucky, thank goodness!!!!
The bus ride from Picton to Nelson seemed to take FOREVER! when in reality it was only 4 hours. But hey I am now in the South Island - the prttier of the 2 islands apprently - already I can see why! Driving along dead straight roads through the mountains and past field after field of grape vines there was no doubt that I wasn't in England! The North Island while very scenic and beautiful could very easily have been mistaken for some of the more scenic and remote areas of the UK but the landscapes I saw today were something else! The major difference from the UK is that we drove 4 hours today but didn't touch a motor way and went through only one major town and when I say major I mean it had a post office and a corner shop!
This afternoon after dumping my stuff on ANOTHER top bunk I walked up a very steep hill to "Middle Earth" aka the Centre of New Zealand. The views from the top of here were again pretty special and the height that the sun was at made it evenmore beautiful!
Did you know - Vegemite was introduced as competition for the popular sandwich filler Marmite and was origianlly called Pawill!
