Not feeling great Sunday morning, Fairoz, Chee and I decided to postpone leaving the hostel until after lunch. This gave us time to pop out to the market and pick up ingredients for spaghetti bolognese! With Fairoz cooking we had a delicious meal that set us up well for an afternoon walking around the gardens and parks.
We got a taxi to the butterfly park but as it was quite pricey we decided to explore the gardens instead. The orchid garden had flowers of every size and shape painted with bright colours and intricate patterns. From there we passed through the hibiscus garden (national flower of Malaysia) where they lined terraced walkways and water fountains and tall he benches had their own fans so you could keep cool as you rested. Lastly we wondered around the lake and chilled in a wooden verandah as the sun was out and it was boiling before catching a taxi home.
Monday was my first day at the hospital, and to be honest I wasn't really looking forward to it. After a week off I had gotten used to having the days to myself so the early start took more effort than I expected.
After following directions from multiple helpful people I think I managed to walk around the entire building before finding the correct office and handing in my paperwork. Directed to the third floor I sought out the Anaesthetics department from the signs in Malay (luckily they just spell everything the way we say it) and introduced myself. Dr Kok was kind enough to show me around the department including the kitchen where three free meals a day are provided!
I started off the day in vascular surgery and got to set a few lines and intubate a patient all before lunch. Not expecting much from the hospital food, I was surprised to find it was Thai chicken curry with rice, and it was very nice! After lunch I got to see a spinal anaesthetic and watch how they set LMAs (laryngeal mask airway) here-with a metal support thing, that makes it all look much harder than in the UK where you just basically stick it down the patients throat.
The hostel has its own kitchen, which is really handy, so I had tuna and pasta salad for dinner and lazed in front of the TV for the rest of the evening (Chow Kit is not the sort of place you explore much after dark).
