On the countdown for my next adventure......leaving in 46 hours (but who is counting!) So what do I know about Borneo, or to more specific Sabah, which is where I am heading.
Borneo is part of Malaysia and is the third largest island in the world. The island boasts remote jungle beauty, tropical adventure, and tribal cultures (including the famous headhunters), and is home to half of all known plant and animal species in the world. This is where we hope to see orangutans in the wild, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, sun bears and all manner of birds.
Fun Facts
· Borneo isn't a country. It is, in fact, an island that is administered by 3 different countries - Brunei, Malaysia and Indonesia.
· Population of 21 million and is home to roughly 200 ethnicities.
· The Borneo rainforest has an estimated age of 130 million years, making it the oldest rainforest in the world.
· The Rafflesia Arnoldii flower, that grows on Mount Kinabalu, smells like a rotten corpse. It's even been nicknamed the 'corpse flower'. It is also the largest flower in the world - can grow up to one metre in diameter and weigh up to a whopping 10kg!
· Home to Southeast Asia's tallest peak, Mount Kinabalu, which soars 4,095 meters.
· The male Proboscis monkey has the biggest nose in relation to its body on Earth.
· Orangutans share about 97% of their DNA with humans.
· Half of the world's timber comes from Borneo. Forty years ago 73.7% of the country was covered by rainforest, tragically today only 50.5% is covered.
I think this is going to be a fun adventure so buckle up and lets us see what awaits us.........
