Skiáthos, is considered the most cosmopolitan island in the Northern Sporades and is truly a paradise on earth, with lush pine forests and 70 beaches with golden sands and crystal-clear blue waters. The most famous beach is Koukounariés, which has been declared the third most beautiful beach in the Mediterranean. The film "Mamma Mia" was partially filmed on Skiathos and nearby Skopelos.
The last day of our first cruise and we awoke to rain!! Not to be deterred we grabbed umbrellas and headed for shore to explore this popular island. The capital town of Skiáthos, the biggest settlement on the island, is the hub of all activity. The town's most important landmark is its natural harbour, which has determined the destiny of the town for centuries. A stroll around the town's paved steep streets reveals cute whitewashed houses with red tiled roofs clinging to the hillsides and colourful gardens. The picturesque harbour surrounded by four small islets is a sight not to be forgotten.
Be sure to visit Boúrtzi, a small peninsula with lush vegetation where the ruins of a Venetian fortress still stand. The fortress was established in 1207 by the Gizi brothers but it was destroyed in 1660 when Admiral Morozini conquered the island. It is now a peaceful place to wander and enjoy the views from both sides of the harbour.
The rain lifted for a while but not enough for us to enjoy one of the many beautiful beaches that surround the town. Instead we opted to sit in a lovely cafe on big comfy lounges with a magnificent view of the harbour enjoying a glass of wine.
Captains Farewell Cocktail Party tonight as we say farewell to some of our new found friends and reminisce about some of the amazing sights we have seen. During this leg of the cruise we sailed approximately 1435 nautical miles and been to many stupendous places. Can't wait for stage two......
