Hanging out with the rich and famous.....
If you have money in South America and/or you´re famous, then Punta del Este is your ultimate summer destination. Thankfully for us its not summer and we could enjoy the beaches without competing with the local superstars!
We originally intended Punta del Este as a stop over on our way to Punta del Diablo to break up the travel, but we were torn when we reached the hostel. The owner was really helpful and friendly and the hotel in Punta del Diablo had stuffed up our booking so we weren´t sure we even had one. If ever you´re in Punta del Este then stay with La Lomita del Chingolo. It was like staying at a mate´s place, walking distance from the beach, with a BBQ and Hush the dog.
We had a great time walking around checking out the beaches and the harbour, but in the end we decided to push on the Punta del Diablo. Punta del Este is just that bit too commercial for what we wanted. Kind of like the Gold Coast. If you travel further away from the main beach you can find some low rise neighbourhoods with a more relaxed feel, but it just wasn´t remote enough for us.
