If you remeber me mentioning our bus to Belize, Orange Walk was at 12:30 at night.....so full of excitement and not a pinch of nerves we arrived in the middle of nowhere in Orange Walk at 5am. Thats a lie, to say the least we jumped at every small noise on our walk to the hotel.
Dont worry mothers, we arrived safe and sound and in the end with no need to panic. Orange Walk is a fairly safe town with a friendly community.
After getting a few hours of zzzzz we woke up feeling fairly refreshed and checked out the town. Not much to see here as it is mainly a stop off point to see the Lamanai, and we felt like the only tourists in town. That night we went to a small pizzeria owned by a French Canadian guy by the name of Carlos. We were the only people there which gave us (and mostly him) a chance to chat.
Turns out we were in the company of celebrity. After a few stories of his life as a chef he dropped the bombshell that he started a pizza restaurant which grew quite rapidly, however he decided to sell for a whopping 1.4 million dollars!! Today, you may know this place....it has quite a reputation worldwide....not sure if anyone has heard of Pizza Hut? Well we met the creator....supposedly. Still a damn good story.
The next day we borded a small boat with our guide Eddy to check out some more Mayan Ruins called the Lamanai. The 1 hour boat trip to the site was amazing; bird life, bats, crocs and dense jungle made for an interesting trip!! Not to mention we stopped off along the way to feed babanas to wild spider monkeys who boarded the boat to collect there loot!! Awesome!!!
We reached the site and after a quick lunch we started the walk to the ruins. By this time a small tropical storm had come over so our wlak to the ruins was a wet one. Despite this the ruins were incredible!! The only the downside was the attack of the mosquitos!!! Relentless little b*****s!!
Umlike Tulum the ruins were set right in the jungle complete with overgrowm Tarzan vines and all!!
The boat trip back was also very wet and we were happy to make it back to the room to shower and rest. After all the next day we were heading up to the northern Cayes!!!
