The bus from Orange Walk to Belize City was an experience of it own.....imagine an old school bus stuffed with as many people as possible and than add heat and and body sweat. Yep, it was pleasant. However we got there in the end and enjoyed the local bus experience. It was (as they often use here) UNBELIZABLE!!! Hahaha....we think this hilarious.
So Belize City, not nice. Went straight through without a glance backwards. Glad we avoided it in the end as we planned to stay 3 nights there. Dirty and dangerous.
We made it to the port with money still in pockets and jumped on the ferry to Caye Caulker. The island itself is very relaxed, under developed and still has the charms of the locals plus a little something for tourists. We were greeted at the jetty by a Rasta guy named Gilbert. Such a character..no teeth dreads and all. He took us around on a golf buggy which is the only transport there (besides bikes and walking) and helped us find a hotel. Unfortunately we brought the rain with us from Orange Walk but the water was still warm and first stop was to the jetty for a dive in the water.
We stayed here for 4 nights and kept it low key due to the rain where we played cards, had a few Belikins (the national beer), read our books and just enjoyed the relaxed vibe of the island.
On our last day we went scuba diving!! And the Mayan gods were looking down on us beacuse the rain ceased that day!!! What luck!! The water was beautiful and the reef stunning....a complete marine world full of fish, stingrays, moray eels, crabs and an abundance of coral!! Dad (steve) You would have loved it!!! This finished of our time at Caye Caulker on a high!!
The following day we got up at the crack of dawn to catch our boat back to Belize City and wait in the safe surroundings of the port to board our bus to Guatemala!!!
Whilst waiting at the port we were traped into conversation with a local who colourfully talked about the gangs and blood spill in Belize City. Apparently also wanted by the police and yet wanted to know why tourists didnt stay in Belize City??....Got me baffled too my brother!! We gave him $5 and sent him on his way.
