I have made a discovery - not every baby creature is cute. When shopping here last week, I picked up a box of eggs. Inside there was a proud mummy maggot with her wriggling babies. I admit that despite my efforts to see the beauty in nature whilst here (even in the things that are designed to kill or bite me), my reaction to the baby maggots was not to coo and say "ah", instead it was definitely more of an "urggh!", as I hastily put the box back.
I think it may be a while before I eat eggs again.
On the other hand, baby impala are very cute. Now is the time of year that they are born, and every day there are more and more of them; there was even one born in our camp a few nights ago. They play just like lambs do, running into each other and jumping over one another, as though they have springs attached to the bottom of their feet - and all the time flicking their tails wildly with excitement and enjoyment.
A little less cute, but still fascinating was the baby preying mantis that I saw when out resetting some of the camera traps. On that same morning we saw a giraffe that had been born during the night, and although a newborn baby it was already 5 feet tall!
