Well, it's a long story that'll have to wait but we are back in Christchurch. Yesterday we started new jobs!! In an English bar and restaurant, thought we would never get them but we have! Will fill in the gaps next time......
Quick catch up...We handed out heaps of cv's in Queenstown to bars, restaurants, ski resorts and even agencys but the general answer was that there wouldn't be any work in Queenstown until mid June as this is when the ski season begins. We spoke to Ram, the guy that we had worked for in Blenheim and he told us that he had jobs nr Christchurch in a packing shed so, pretty sure that we wouldn't find much in Queenstown, we headed back to Christchurch!! Ram had told us that the packing shed was in a village called Southbridge, which is about 60km south of CHCH. When we arrived we were quite suprised, the town was tiny and only had a village shop. We had to wait for Ram to ring us and give us the actual address of the accomodation, despite our efforts to get in touch with him, he didn't ring until a few hours later!! We drove to the packing shed where we were to meet a friend called Donny and he was going to tell us where the accomodation was as Ram didn't actually know himself! When we got to the shed, Neil spoke to the superviser (who wasn't aware that we were starting work) and he said to just come in the next morning. Donny gave us directions to the house but told us that it wasn't a house like the one we had stayed in in Blenheim and that it belonged to a couple who allowed him to stay there. We were slightly concerned about having to go and just knock on somebodys door and annoyed that Ram hadn't explained this. We found Rakia Huts which was even smaller than Southbrigde and found the house where Donny was staying. There was no one in so we again had to sit and wait! At 5pm when Donny came back from work he showed us the accomodation which was awful; what i can only describe as a kind of shed in the garden. He introduced us to the owner who clearly didn't want any more backpackers staying in his house and so we stayed at a campground opposite the house, which was also horrible! The next morning we turned up at the packing shed and spoke to a superviser who was working for Ram. He didn't want us, nor did he know that we were even coming, and neither did the guy who owns the shed! We were pretty annoyed at having spent $150 on petrol getting to Christchuch for there to be no jobs and for no one to even have known that we were on our way. What sort of business is Ram trying to run? Not a very effective one if he can't communicate with his supervisers and clients properly!!! We were so annoyed because we weren't really in the position to be throwing money away. We didn't even bother ringing Ram and arguing with him, instead we just drove to Christchurch and started job hunting there. What made matters worse was the fact that i got two phone calls from Queenstown about prospective jobs! If only we had been more patient instead of chasing Ram half way across the Island!
Everything has now sorted itself out and we have landed jobs in a bar. We are working in two different bars but they are owned by the same people. We are going to see how it goes here so we don't know how long we'll stay, at least for a month until we can get some money!
