On Monday morning we headed back up to the car market and we hadn't been there for long when we spotted an orange (previously white!) Toyota Hiace. The inside of the van was immaculate and there were three seats in the front. The price on the van was $3700 which was good because we were working with a maximum budget of $4000. Although i was apprehensive about rushing into a sale, we asked for a test drive because we were scared it might get snapped up. The owners had only just brought her in that day and had already had quite a bit of interest. The test drive went pretty well but Neil had to drive around the block a few times to get used to the gear stick which is on the side of the steering wheel. After the test drive we had pretty much decided tht we wanted her and so made the owners an offer which they accepted subject to a mechanical check. We had to pay for a history check and extra for a mechanical check, which i think should be carried out before you can sell a car but isn't. The history check took all of 5 minutes and we had to go back after lunch to see if there was anything mechanically wrong. The van needed new tyres but nothing else major so we discussed a price with the sellers and that was that, she was ours! The sellers were really nice and gave us loads of advice about where to go in Newzealand. They had called the car Ollie and we decided it would be bad luck to change it. Ollie it is then!
On Tues we headed down to the harbour and caught a boat across to Devonport, a small Victorian seaside village. It didn't really seem that Victorian but it was very pretty and when we got to the lookout point (a dormant volcano)the veiws over Auckland were fab. When we got back to Auckland we had tea in the hostel and then we headed back out to a bar called minus 5. The bar was amazing; everything was made of ice. The bar, the seats, the sculptures and even the glasses we drank our cocktails from! Although we were given coats and gloves, it was still freezing but we were only allowed in for 30 minutes anyway. We were really disappointed that we weren't allowed to take any photos inside the bar. We had to pay for the photos that the staff took if we wanted any. After we had been in the ice bar we went futher round onto the harbour and found an Irish bar with live music. The Australian guys that were playing were really funny and the music was good so we had a few drinks and then headed back to the hostel a little merry!
