With only two things on the schedule today, you'd think we had a quiet day.....not so much! The day started with a trip to Stonehenge. This is one of the most interesting and amazing things I've ever seen. We did an audio tour while there and it gave us all the information about Stonehenge. From the pamphlet we received as part of the tour: Stonehenge is an ancient temple aligned with the movement of the sun. The stones were raised 4500 years ago by sophisticated prehistoric people. Stonehenge is perhaps the most famous prehistoric monument in the world. Begun as a simple earthwork enclosure, it was built in several stages, with the unique lintelled stone circle being erected in the late Neolithic Period around 2500 BC.
A few of the things we learned today that totally blew our minds......they moved these huge stones that weighed up to 30 tons with timber logs rolling them over 150+ miles to where Stonehenge is today. The structure is built tongue in groove, something not used very widely in that day and age. The ditches around Stonehenge were dug with antler tools. We sat in awe for awhile just looking at this marvel. The people who were able to come up with this were way ahead of their time!
After a little break in the action to rest, we got ready and headed out to Piccadilly Circus. This is a square in London that is very similar to Times Square, on a smaller scale. They have the huge TV monitors with ads and lots of restaurants, shops and pubs in the area as well. Tonight we tried an Italian restaurant called the Spaghetti House. This place was authentic Italian in the heart of London. Along with some great Italian beer, I enjoyed some of the best Spaghetti Carbonara since I was in Rome!! With full tummies we continued on our way to the Queen's Theater for the last event of the night.....Les Miserables.
Now, I'm not an old hand at theater, I've not attended a lot of plays. But, I find that it is one of my favorite things to do when the occasion arises. This performance was the best I've every seen and had me from the very start. The actors were amazing, the singing was phenomenal and the stage....well, let's just say this is definitely a 21st century production the way they were able to reset the stage as part of the play itself. Wow! It just makes me want to plan a trip to New York to see 3-4 plays and do nothing else!!!
It's time to hit the hay, tomorrow is going to be a long day! We're going to do a city tour, visits to Westminster Abbey, Kensington Palace and Notting Hill. The last tour of the day before we join our Brendan Vacations tour is the one I've been looking most forward to. You'll have to come back tomorrow to find out where we've been!! Good night all......
