Have been trying to make the most of the time before Adam starts his course and before colder weather arrives by seeing as many of the local sights as we can.
Adam and I went to an amazing National Trust house (Ickworth House) built in the Victorian era by someone besotted with Italy. He built it in Roman style and imported many beautiful artworks with the hope of it becoming an art gallery for edcuational purposes. It was beautiful and very decadent. Fascinating to see how it all ran (thanks Lisa for the Nat Trust membership tip which made it free to enter!).
We all drove to Cambridge last weekend. Lots of history but we were a little disappointed. Very expensive, crowded and we were continually asked about tours. Probably did not see it at its best though as it was wet and cold meaning we couldnt go to the gardens or punting. The museum was good with kids fascinated by the Armoury section. Feeling pleased we are living out of town in the peaceful English countryside.
Had a fantastic time this weekend with 2 trips. The first was to West Stow village which was a restoration of the first 5th Century Anglo-Saxon village and archaeological site. Remains from the mesolithic era and onwards found there. Had fun exploring the homes sunken into the ground and learning about life from that era. Kids got to dress up, practice weaving and spinning, search for artifacts hidden in the sand and see farm animals. They also had a fabulous playground which we braved the rain to go on. In fond memory of Stirling East- a scrub house was built by Zoe.
Sunday we went to the town of Ely with its beautiful cathedral and barges. A highlight was a visit to Oliver Cromwell's House (controversial 17th Century political and military leader who ended up having the king beheaded). Again, the kids got to dress up, play with toys of the era and see a "Haunted room". The noisy ducks and swans provided lots of entertainment. The day ended with our first British pub meal- a Sunday roast complete with Yorkshire pudding. Not the best meal ever but lovely beer! (No one was brave enough to have the specialty of the area- eel soup!).
