Went to the fantastic 11th century Norman village recreation of Mount Fitchett Castle. It was so well done and you really felt like you came away with an insight into the life and times of this gruesome era. Amazing to see the way the castles were built and defended. The kids got to try on the heavy chainmail and helmets and had a ball with all the animals there, including the deer. Thanking our lucky stars we didnt live back then... so barbaric.... hands amputated for theft or severely burnt with the rate of healing determining your innocence. People beheaded or caged and left to die, suspected "witches" tested by being tied up and thrown into a river> if you floated you were considered guilty and if you sank, then you were innocent.... damned either way! The surgeons were usually barbers as they were skilled with a blade! Most patients died... but in defence of the barbers- this tended to be from infection.
