Happiness Is The Road
We didn't like this camp site. It was a bit too hill billy for us and full of annoying people. We decided to have breakfast on the road. We drove a few k's down the road to the car park of the next sight, The Grotto. We had breakfast here along with about a million flies. The flies here are the worst they've been for a while and certainly the worst Jay's experienced. After brekky we went to have a look at The Grotto which was a stunning sight. From there we managed to shake off the flies for a while and went to the next stop, London Bridge. This used to be two arches forming a natural bridge but back in January 1990 one of the arches collapsed into the sea. It is still a great sight though. The flies were back and helped escort us round. Our next stop was The Arch and then after that we stopped at Port Campbell. This is a lovely little town and we had a bit of a mooch around. After this it was on to Loch Ard Gorge and the main attraction of the Great Ocean Road, the 12 Apostles. The car park to 12 Apostles was absolutely rammed and this place was by the far the busiest and most touristy place I have been to in Australia so far. We both hate crowds but tried our best to ignore all the tourists and went to the viewing platforms. There are only 6 apostles left now, the others have succumbed to the sea and collapsed, but they were a terrific sight. We are both in complete awe of not only here but all the wonderful and beautiful natural sights along this incredible road. We managed to shake off the annoying tourists and hit the road again. The next section of road took us away from the coast for a while through forests and the road was very steep and windy in places. We stopped next at a place called Johanna, a short detour from the main highway. This place had been recommended to us by the funny couple we met at Robe. Their recommendation was a very good one. This place was majestic in it's beauty. There was a big sandy beach there and the ocean was crashing big powerful waves upon the sand. We sat there for ages and soaked up the awesome display the ocean provided for us. From here we wound our way round to Apollo Bay where we had booked a camp site for the night. We had got the last site at Pisces Holiday Park. We had tried about five or six others to no avail. We had to pay though and this place was the most expensive of the trip, $70!!!! The most up till now had been $47 and the usual is only $30. Only one night of extortion though hopefully as the Australia Day weekend finishes tomorrow and the kids go back to school on Wednesday. Peak season is nearly over. We collapsed in bed shattered tonight. We had done loads today.
