Happiness Is The Road
After breakfast we went to do our dishes. It was half 9 and whilst we were there two rough looking tattooed Aussie blokes came to use the barbie to fry up some bacon. They were drinking tinnies already! The smell of the bacon was heavenly! At about 10 we hit the road. Our first stop was to Foodland just down the road to stock up. After that we headed off in the direction of Robe further down the coast. We stopped on the way at Pink's Beach and had a stroll down the beach and in the sea. It was already feeling really hot with the temperature expecting to reach about 35 today. After that we carried on to Robe which took about 45 minutes. I had phoned ahead and booked a site in Robe as it is supposed to be a very popular resort and this is the busiest time of the year. We found the Sea Vu Caravan Park no problem. It was right on the beach but our site wasn't. We had got used to a sea view and we didn't really like this place. It just felt too busy and hemmed in and touristy. The small and quirky places are best. This place was too corporate. We settled in though and had some lunch and then went for a walk into the town. Robe is a really lovely place. It has loads of nice shops and it is full of cafes and restaurants. We had a mooch around and went in a few shops. One of them had a wicker emu outside and we took some funny photos. We went in the butchers shop to try and get some sugar free bacon, we failed again! Next we went back through the camp site and to the beach. Robe is in a bay and it is beautiful. The sea is a wondrous light blue colour and it was shimmering in the sun light. The beaches were idyllic. As it was getting so hot the sand was red hot but we found a nice spot of sand to sit and chill on for a while. We both had a paddle out into the warm water and had fun with the waves splashing us. Jay was screaming a bit. I also had a swim out to one of the pontoons they had moored up in the bay. The water was absolutely lovely. The time just seemed to fly and before we knew it it was about 6 o'clock. We wandered back to the camper, had showers and then started to think about making tea. Whilst we were chopping up our veggies on the outside table the guy from the tent next to us came over and mumbled something. We figured out in the end that he was asking us if we'd like some fish to have for our meal. He had a great big boat parked in front of his tent and he had been out fishing earlier on in the day. He was a bit rough looking but seemed a decent enough bloke. He offered us some Australian Salmon that he had caught today. This was too good an offer to refuse. We were going to have pork but now tea was fish! He gave us two whole fish and asked us if we knew what to do with them. We must have looked at him blankly so he told us how to de-scale them, cut them, gut them and prepare them. On Australian camp sites fish can only be prepared in the fish cleaning area so we trotted off there, armed with our fish, a bowl of flour and a bread knife - the only knife we had. The fish cleaning area was empty which was lucky as we'd probably have looked stupid to the professional fish preparing onlookers. The fish were slippery to touch but with the bread knife I expertly de-scaled them. Jay then took hold of the knife and with the expertise of a master chef she cut off their heads and tails and gutted them. It was a pretty horrible job but fun at the same time. This wasn't how we had expected the evening to go, cutting fishes heads off!! When they were gutted we covered them in flour and took them back to the camper to be cooked. I got them frying in some olive oil along with some zuchinni (courgettes), brocolli and onions. The flour helped the skin really crisp up and before long I had two delicious looking fish ready to serve. We sat down at the back of the camper with beers and got stuck in. The meat just fell off the bone and tasted delicious. We were very happy. This fish challenge had been perfectly executed!! We ate our fish to a soundtrack of Salt 'n' Pepa on repeat!! Someone somewhere was playing this **** music really loud. 'Urrgh push push it real good urrgh push push it real good'. What a load of nonsense. Why is it than when people play loud music and annoy others its always **** music? I love music and wouldn't mind listening to something good. Halfway through the meal the police drove into the camp site. Had they come to get Salt 'n' Pepa or was this a coincidence? The music did briefly stop but then they started pushing it again, real good!!! Just when we had nearly finished our delightful meal the couple on the other side of us started chatting, they didn't stop! The woman had been annoying Jay earlier by walking round saying 'Oh It's so lovely here' in a loud voice and nagging her husband. We had a nice chat with them for a while but they weren't for moving and it got a bit boring. They also had been given fish and a crab from our neighbour. They said that he had a smokers cough and would be retching and spewing in the morning. Lovely, Salt 'n' Pepa till dawn then that to look forward to. In the end both our attention spans were being tested to the limit! There's only so much information you can retain on the history of Toyota camper vans. Eventually we managed to shake them off, but Salt 'n' Pepa were still giving it some!! We went to do our dishes but they spotted us and came over again. They wouldn't leave us alone. We were getting fraught now! We had to shake them off and eventually got our dishes done and hid in the camper with the curtains shut. We half expected a 'yoo hoo' and a tap on the window later, but they seemed to have gone to bed. She must have exhausted herself with all the nagging! The fish neighbour had gone out fishing again. We just hoped to Christ that he didn't come knocking with a crab later on. We didn't fancy a load of crab based shena****ns! He didn't offer us a crab but upon his return he mumbled loudly in a gruff voice 'have you two gone to bed?'! We eventually got to bed and fell asleep to Salt telling Pepa to push it real good. Any pushing will have to wait till the morning though because we were exhausted. Our camp spot was on a slope and our bed was facing downhill. We went to sleep slip sliding into a wiggly mass of limbs down by the brake lights. What a strange and fun day this had been.
