Happiness Is The Road
It’s the first day of summer today! After all the usual stuff this morning I went to see Anxious Bay and for a motor around the Elliston cliff top drive. Anxious Bay was very serene and I didn’t feel on edge even the slightest bit! The cliff top drive was spectacular. The well maintained dirt road weaved it’s way along the cliff tops and the ocean was very dramatic. Huge waves were pounding the cliffs. After the serenity of all the sheltered bays I’ve seen recently It was great to see the ocean back at full force. The cliff top drive also had a load of interesting sculptures on it, including some thongs (flip flops) and my new mate on the bike! See the photos. After this I hit the Flinders Highway. I made one more stop on the way at Locks Well. A 283 step (I counted them) staircase winds its way down to the beach below. Apparently it’s called the Stairway to Heaven which I can understand as the beach is pretty awesome. The waves were fierce, huge and crashing. The noise from them was tremendous. I stayed here for a while in awe just watching the pounding ocean. After the 283 steps back up I noticed a lizard under the camper. It was sat in a small puddle of water under the front. It was drinking from the water dripped out from the air conditioning. It looked very happy indeed and I was a bit reluctant to drive off and ruin its enjoyment. As I reversed away I saw the lizard pull a disgruntled face (well I’m sure it would have done if it could!) and crawl back under the bush at the edge of the parking area. Next stop was the deathly sounding Coffin Bay. This place is lovely and really picturesque and not spooky as the name suggests. Coffin Bay was discovered by Lieutenant Matthew Flinders and his crew on the 16th February 1802. Flinders named the bay after his friend Admiral Sir Isaac Coffin. The caravan park here wasn’t busy and I got a lovely quiet spot. I could tell room all the roo poo on the grass that my furry skippy friends would be visiting later. That was great to know. Whilst I was waiting for the roos though I had the most amazing birds to keep me entertained. There were loads of them in the trees and on the grass. They were either parrots or cockatoos. They had grey feathers but had this beautiful pinkish red front. They made a hell of a racket but were great to watch. Just as the birds were quietening down at dusk the roos started to come out. By dark there were loads of them everywhere. When I went to the ablutions in the night they all gave me a suspicious look! On the way back they were hopping and skipping at speed and I thought I might get run over! That reminds me I had a dream the other night that I’d gone to the loo in the middle of the night but I couldn’t get into the ablutions block as my way was barred by two very hard skinhead type kangaroos! Nite nite and sweet dreams of skippy.
