Happiness Is The Road
This was a lovely place to camp. The surroundings are beautiful. When I went to have a shower I saw a huge brown beetle in the basin and my first spider in Australia. It was lurking under the soap tray in the shower! It wasn’t that big or particularly scary or poisonous looking so I got on with my shower. Because these showers are semi outdoors there were loads of dead and alive insects about. After brekky I went for a walk from the camp site through the gully and up to the Sugargum Lookout. It was a 8 kilometre return walk. I saw kangaroos and emus on the way. The Sugargums are trees which are so named because of the sweet taste of their seedling foliage. I got back from the walk at about 11ish and then hit the highway to Port Pirie where I stopped to get some cash. After that it was onto the Yorke Peninsula. I am heading down to the Innes National Park at the tip of the peninsula but I am stopping somewhere en route tonight to break the journey. The Yorke Peninsula is boot shaped like Italy and Innes National Park is in the boot bit. When I’d been in Port Pirie I’d been speaking to Jay and had told her that I could go to one of three camp sites on the way, Port Rickaby, Balgowan or Point Turton. Jay chose Balgowan and what a great choice that was! The drive there was pretty much all through agricultural land and little farming towns. I had been told that with the exception of the National Park all of the peninsula is like this. It took about two hours to get to Balgowan which is on the coast. It is a tiny place and the camping area was a patch of land on the cliff side overlooking the bay and beach. It was a beautiful quiet spot. The sign at the entrance to the camp area said to check in at the kiosk. I went to the kiosk to find another sign which said to check in and pay fees to the lady who lived across the road , the house with the red mail box. I went to this house as instructed and found a couple of cheerful old ladies sat in the porch. She invited me in to her living room, a lovely old fashioned room with one of those nice musty smells. She took my fee, a very reasonable $18 and gave me a key to get into the shower room. I was very happy here for the rest of the day. It was lovely here but very local. I read my book whilst also admiring the calm and lovely view. I use the barbeque later on to cook my sausages and had an early night. It was fairly windy here and it got quite cold later on. It was a double sleeping bag and socks night. So very different from just two nights ago in Parachilna when I needed to have the fan on to get to sleep.
By the way I’ve just started reading a spooky thiller, Blood Harvest by S.J. Bolton. It's set in a dark sinister Northern town and seems very 'Royston Vasey' to me. Edward to Tubs 'Are these people local, we'll have no trouble here'!!!! And the blood harvest could it be anything to do with butcher Hilary Briss' special stuff! Yes 'Mickey Love' I think it could be.
