Happiness Is The Road
We had heard the rain tinkling on the camper’s roof during the night. We had set our alarm for half five with the intention of getting up and going to watch the sun rise over Uluru. When we looked outside, although the rain had stopped, the sky was still completely clouded over. We couldn’t therefore see that the sunrise on the rock would be that spectacular with a cloud covering so we went back to sleep. We made a mental note to try again tomorrow. When we awoke again it was gone nine. We had a leisurely brekky and then we drove back to the National Park. It was still completely cloudy but Uluru still looked good. We didn’t head to Uluru though. Today we headed to Kata Tjuta or The Olgas as they are better known. They were about 50 kilometres from Uluru but we could see them in the distance. Kata Tjuta in the Pitjanjatjara language means ‘many heads’ and it is made up from many different pieces of rock spreading over quite a large area. We first stopped at a viewing area a few kilometres away and got some great photos of both Kata Tjuta and Uluru which could be seen in the distance. After this we drove closer to the rocks and went for a walk up to and around part of this amazing formation. Once up close to the rock we could tell that Kata Tjuta was made from a different type of rock to Uluru. Uluru is sandstone whilst Kata Tjuta is made from conglomerate - a mix of gravel, pebbles and boulders cemented together by sand and mud. It contains many minerals and other rock types including basalt and granite. The walk went to two different lookouts. The first one wasn’t too far from the car park and afforded a view through the rocks to the bush beyond. The walk then continued a few kilometres to a second lookout. The path wound it’s way through canyons between the rocks and involved a bit of rock scrambling. It was worth the effort to this second lookout as the view from here was more impressive. It was made even better because there were no other people at this lookout ’woop wooping’ etc. All you could hear were the birds and the breeze. It was beautiful. I could feel the spiritual energy of the place. The rocks were buzzing with energy. It almost felt like the rocks had a million eyes that were observing. It was time to go when other people could be heard approaching and headed back to the car park. The walk was very comfortable as with the cloud cover it wasn’t quite as hot as yesterday’s walk. We were thinking of staying at Kata Tjuta until sunset but the cloud cover quashed that idea. We instead headed back to the campground at Yulara and had our tea. Tomorrow we are heading away from Yulara so it is palya (Pitjanjatjara for goodbye) to Uluru and Kata Tjuta.
