Happiness Is The Road
It had not been a good night. As well as the sliding door hokey cokey we were disturbed by lowlives driving round the camp site at 3am with their stereos boom boom booming. We emerged from the camper van at around 7am absolutely knackered and surveyed the sink estate around us. All was quiet for now with the only sound coming from the ducks that were bathing in the big puddle next to us. They were having a wonderful time splashing about in their makeshift pond. We showered and then had our brekky whilst watching what was going on around us. The sink estate had now come to life. It was hilarious and like a situation comedy. The ducks had now gone no doubt scared off by the pneumatic drilling that was coming from somewhere nearby. A guy who was the spitting image of Perry Como emerged from the camper van opposite dressed in a cardigan and rolled up jeans, smoking a pipe. This was not a magic moment for us. Next his neighbour, a shaggy looking man, appeared from his camper van with just his pyjama bottoms on and a perplexed look on his face. He had a pair of binoculars in his hands and he promptly wandered off to the amenities. The mind boggles as to what he was looking for. We just hope he found it! Just over the way a young guy with one of the most offensive looking hats we have ever seen was doing a sliding door hokey cokey and constantly going back and forth to the camp kitchen with huge boxes and big wriggling and bulging plastic bags. Hell only knows what he was cooking up for breakfast but a few minutes later a policeman appeared from the direction of the camp kitchen and appeared to be looking for 'offensive hat'. It's either offensive hats that are illegal in New Zealand or it's against the law to slaughter goats on a Saturday! We'll never know but we didn't see 'offensive hat' again. By now it was only 8am and we had workmen outside our camper van brushing the water from the big puddle and pneumatic drilling around it. What a wonderful haven of peace we were in! The evil workmen were destroying the duck's pond. We finished our brekky to the sound of drilling. You really couldn't make this **** up! We left the sink estate around ten, just after we'd had a calming cuddle with the very friendly camp site cat, and went to catch the bus into the city. It took about forty five minutes to get into the centre of Wellington. We had a mooch around the shops and then went to find the cable car that would take us up to the botanic gardens that overlook the city centre. The cable car is 110 years old and we enjoyed the short ride up the hill. Once there we admired the view over the city and the bay. Wellington is in a lovely location. The botanic gardens were very beautiful and we decided to walk through the gardens back down to the city. The weather was great. We had our lunch on the way and really enjoyed the walk. At times it didn't feel like we were in a city. The walk took us through a wonderfully gorgeous rose garden and also through the Bolton Street Memorial Park which is the oldest cemetery in Wellington dating back to 1840. It was a tranquil and lovely place with some fascinating headstones. Once back down in the city centre we had a walk along the waterfront before catching the bus back to the camp site. It was the same lady driving the bus as on the way into the city. She was brilliant and by far the most friendly and cheerful bus driver we have come across. We got back to the sink estate to find the poor ducks aimlessly wandering around trying to find their pond. Just one more night here before making our escape from the North Island tomorrow. It was another noisy night.
