Happiness Is The Road
We awoke to another beautiful warm day and opened door 15 on our advent calendar. To our delight we found a really cute mouse wearing a christmas hat and carrying a big candle. After brekky we went to say goodbye to all the gorgeous friendly animals. We saw the happy lambs first followed by the rabbit and guinea pigs before popping over to see Molly the pig who was awake and not snoring today. She was outside in her pen grunting away and appeared in fine fettle. We didn't feed her as she is way too large and when she realised no food was on offer she almost seemed to snarl at us before turning her back on us and shuffling off. She was as cantankerous as ever! Next up we went to see the incorrigible Terry goat. He was straining on his leash and appeared absolutely desperate to give Jay another good butting. We gave him some food and then we were off to see the sheep. They were extremely happy to see us. After we had climbed over the stile Jay shook the food bag and they came charging over to see us almost knocking us over! They are such beautiful, sweet, loving animals and oh so very soft. We gave them some food and and some big cuddles before we very reluctantly left. We will miss these animals very much. We went to say goodbye to Barbara as we left and complimented her once again on what a lovely camp site she had. She wished us well on our travels. We hit the road in the direction of Blenheim. The road took us alongside Queen Charlotte Sound and under the clear blue sky and blazing sunshine it looked glorious. It took us just under an hour to get to Blenheim which is in the Marlborough region of New Zealand and is famous for it's wine. We did some food shopping at New World and then we went to find some wine to taste. We had decided to visit an organic vineyard, Seresin Estate. The town was very ordinary with not much character but the surrounding area was lovely. On the way we passed row upon row of vines stretching off into the distance in all directions. The Marlborough region is huge and is known for it's dry climate and fertile soil which is obviously very suitable for wine making. For the first time on our travels around New Zealand the landscape was yellow and dry, not the usual lush green that we have become used to. The only green was the grapevines. It was a gorgeous looking area with the sharp yellow of the grass being interspersed with the vibrant green of the grapevines and with a dramatic mountainous backdrop. We were soon at the Seresin Estate cellar door and tasting some delicious wine. As well as the vines they also have an olive grove here so we came away with both some organic wine and some organic olive oil. After our lovely wine experience we hit the road again and headed south with the intention of stopping the night in Kaikoura. The road took us right beside the ocean and made it's way south round a series of bends and through tunnels in the rock. Of course we had to contend with the usual tailgating and aggression from the Kiwis. As we were driving along right next to the sea Jay suddenly shouted out that she had seen something in the water. We stopped at a rest area just ahead and got out to have a better look. We saw something splashing about in the water and realised that it was a beautiful seal. To be precise a New Zealand fur seal. Upon looking down the rocky beach and coast we realised that there were loads of seals all over the place some lounging on rocks and others playing in the sea. When we carried on further down the road we noticed more and more seals all the way along. We stopped a couple more times and saw absolutely loads of these beautiful animals, counting 26 of them in one small cove alone. One of them was lying flat on his back and seriously chilling out on the beach. He looked ever so funny. After this we continued our journey to Kaikoura, another fairly ordinary looking place, and found a camp site for the night. It was fairly busy but we got a good enough spot surrounded by a high hedge. It was quite hot when we got here but cooled down later as a thunder storm came through. We'd had a flipping marvellous day.
