Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we went into Hokitika to get some food at New World. We were astonished and amazed to see that the backdrop to the town was beautiful snow capped mountains. The town was in a lovely location with the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. There must have been low cloud shrouding the view yesterday as we're sure that the mountains weren't there then. After stocking up we drove to the Westcoast Treetop Walk which was about twenty kilometres away. We had enjoyed our treetop walks in Australia and we were looking forward to this one. The walk started on a gravel path up a hill through the rainforest until the path led onto a steel platform and out into the tree canopy twenty metres above the ground. The weather was gorgeously warm with a blue sky and we got some great views of the majestic snow capped mountains in the distance. We followed the platform to a viewing tower and took the spiral staircase to the top so we were now forty metres above the ground. From the top the view was even better as we looked across the tropical trees to the mountains and to Lake Mahinapua that was shimmering in the sunlight below us. We met a lovely Kiwi couple at the top who took our photo and we enjoyed chatting with them for a while. Once down from the tower we followed the platform round to a very bouncy cantilever before heading back to where we had started. We'd had a great morning. Once back at the camper van we continued our journey south towards glacier country. The road was extremely twisting in places with plenty of hair pin bends but for the first time in ages we had a lovely stress free drive. The road was very quiet and the journey today was free from dangerous and impatient tailgating idiots. The views and vistas along the way were fantastic and before too long we had arrived in the Franz Josef Glacier Village. The snow capped mountains that dominated the town were impressively dramatic. The camp site was very close to the centre of the village and was set amongst the rainforest. We got a great secluded spot and chilled out for the rest of the day. The camp site was lovely and quiet. There were however a rampant number of sandflies who most definitely saw us as dinner! We're off to see a glacier tomorrow.
