Happiness Is The Road
As we didn't fancy eating breakfast to a Chas 'n' Dave soundtrack we relocated ourselves to the Coles car park for breakfast. After brekky, a rather scary moment, and some more Coles shopping we headed towards the vineyards. Whilst having breakfast two young girls walked through the car park near to us and one of them was screaming like a woman possessed/wild banshee into her mobile phone 'I haaaaaaaaaattttttteeeeee yooooooooooooooooooooooooooou'! Someone had either upset her a bit or she was mentally unsound. We can only guess as to which but we felt really sorry for her friend who was very quiet and possibly extremely alarmed/disturbed by her friends behaviour. When we came out of Coles a while later she was sat outside having a smoke and crying with her friend desperately trying to console her. She didn't seem to have sorted the problem out and seriously needed to take her tablets. The people in Cessnock generally looked a bit scary and they were very big. The Coca Cola Company and Cadburys must make an absolute stonking fortune here! It wasn't too far out of Cessnock that we started to see vines growing at the side of the road. The rain had cleared up and there was a blue sky today. The countryside in the Hunter Valley is very green and beautiful. Yesterday at the camp site we had picked up a wine guide to the Hunter Valley. We didn't want to go on a tour or trawl round loads of vineyards so we picked just one to visit. We wanted to go to a smaller quieter one and chose the Constable Estate as it is a boutique vineyard and set amongst some lovely gardens. We chose extremely well. The gardens around the cellar door were indeed lovely. We passed loads of bigger vineyards on the way and their car parks were jam packed with cars, campers and coaches. We were the only people wine tasting at Constable Estate when we got there and it was bliss. We just tasted the C******nay as it is our favourite wine. The wine was very dry and tasted delicious. The two ladies at the cellar door were really lovely and we had a good chat with them about wine, Australia, the dark and doom laden UK and our travels. Constable Wines are only available at the cellar door, a few restaurants and a couple of independent bottle shops. We bought a bottle of C******nay and they also gave us a free half opened bottle. They knew we were travelling on a budget and must have taken a shine to us. It was very good of them. We'd done some wine tasting now, albeit only a little bit, but it was enough for us and we hit the road inland and away from the vines. I had read about a place inland called Burning Mountain near Murrurundi. It seemed like it was worth a look. It took us about two hours to get to Murrurundi which is a lovely little town in the middle of horse country. We saw loads of horses on the way grazing and looking majestic in the fields. Shhhhhh.... don't anybody tell Tesco as before you know it the horse'll be in a lasagne! We went to the only camp site in Murrurundi and it was lovely and quiet. It looked very well cared for and apart from a couple of cabins we were the only ones there. The lady who owned it was lovely and we met her dog, a cute white thing called Sophie, that was running around the reception. We had a lovely tea and got an early night.
