Hmmm....so, yeah....not so much what we pictured. Hopefully Bratislava is not symbolic of all of Slovakia. The people seem very friendly, but the city is not at all like Prague. The buildings are very run down, and there is little to see or visit. Everything, and we mean EVERYTHING, is covered in graffiti...more than either of us have ever seen in one place. We visited the Museum of Communism in Prague, and it seems as though Bratislava is taking some time to recover. We got off the train from Prague and spent a while searching for how to buy a ticket for the tram that would take us to the hostel. Difficult, since nothing is in English and the systems here do not work at all how they work at home. Finally, Sean figured it out and we took a short, but kind of sketchy, ride to the hostel. We had a short walk after getting off the tram, and a kid set off a firecracker....after walking through the less-than-comforting neighborhood we both thought it was a gun and freaked out a little. We braved going out at night to the local pub, and we were pleasantly surprised. The food was much more appetizing than it was in Prague....Sean had blueberry dumplings with cocoa sauce and Kaitlin had pierogis with sheep's cheese and "bacon"....both were pretty good. Like we found in Prague, the beer here may not taste great, but it sure does have a punch! The beer costs around $1.00, so we can't complain too much! Tomorrow we head to Budapest!
