Just arrived in Munich, Germany after spending a fabulous couple of days in Salzburg. Salzburg is definitely our favorite place so far! We arrived on Sunday and set out to find our hostel. We had to take a tram since it was located on the outskirts of the city, and the directions we had said it was a short walkhill uphill from the tram stop. Well, the "uphill walk" was more like an Olympic training activity....with 30-pound bags on our backs, we barely made it to the top. Seriously, we cannot even begin to describe how steep and long this hill was. After checking in and catching our breath (which took about an hour) we caught a bus into the center of town. The second we got off the bus in Old Town, we fell in love with Salzburg! Both of us agree we would love to live there. The city is like something out of a fairy-tale....perfectly clean, gorgeous buildings, romantic, charming....the list goes on and on. We had a great dinner (beef goulash, chicken curry, and local beer and wine).
The next morning was the event Kaitlin had been looking forward to for months (and the event Sean had been dreading)....the Sound of Music tour!!!!! Incredibly corny, overpriced, and touristy, it was FABULOUS! Even Sean had a great time. We saw all the places the movie was filmed, listened to the soundtrack, and got a great tour of the city.
After the tour, we spent the afternoon and evening walking around Salzburg, taking pictures, browsing in shops, and stopping here and there for a drink. We happened upon an Irish pub and ended up talking to the bartender (who was from Ireland) for a long time about traveling in the U.S. and Europe. He told us to go check out a brewery down the street that is run by monks. We had a couple beers there, as well as some burenwurst, and had a great time enjoying the local culture.
We´ve mentioned before that beers over here are stronger (sometimes a LOT stronger) than what we are used to at home.....the monk´s beer was no exception. Sean drank more than Kait and it all started to hit him on the bus ride back to the hostel. He started singing songs about how badly he had to use the bathroom...."Tinkle, tinkle little star, Sean going to pee no matter where we are..." and he also decided he wanted the candy that a little girl was eating and whispered that he wanted to beat her up for it. He then started telling Kaitlin about a man out our window that was a "very sharp dresser" - it was a mannequin, not a man. It was a very entertaining ride back to the hostel!
We are in Munich now....it is pouring rain. We´ve lucked out so far with the weather, this is the first day of real rain. Hopefully tomorrow will be nicer!
