Deciding Factor!! This morning I woke early to join the Japanese group for breakfast before they headed off on their boat trip up to Salto Falls (what I had done on the first day). Breakfast was a bit average for me as I couldn't have the pancake and instead ended up with potatoes and a scrambled egg - strange combination. I met two other independent travellers: Daniel from the states and Greg from Poland - which had decided to come out here independent of a tour company and were having lots of trouble trying to sort out excursions and accomodation. As the rest of my group (the Japanese) were off to Salto Falls today I had the day free and so decided to head with Daniel and Greg to the airport so they could sort out their tour. At the airport I met a lovely Spanish girl and her family (Venezuelan background) and had an incredibly interesting conversation about Venezuela. During the chat another Venezuelan guy and his family who I had chatted with 3 days ago came and joined us. Basically I was presented with the cold-hard facts about the country, political situation and the security situation. To say I was paranoid and scared after our conversation is an understatement and as I write this I am doing my best to work out a way out of the country. Greg the Polish guy managed to get a boat tour out to the falls but the American guy Daniel did not so we decided to hang out around the lagoon for the day. We headed back to the camp grabbed a few things and then went for a walk around the town; we found a nice little resteraunt offering BBQ chicken and salad and stopped for lunch. Canaima is an expensive little place as everything needs to be flown in so food is double the price compared to back in the cities. We walked around the lake in the hope we might find away across to the waterfalls but unfortunately had no luck and so instead went for a swim. Daniel has travelled extensively through South America and this is his second time here in Venezuela so he was able to give me some really good, up to date and useful information about Venezuela. After my chat with Daniel I am sure I will leave the country as soon as possible. The rest of the afternoon we walked around the putter falls and enjoyed the perfect weather. In the evening we went to a few other resorts to use their wifi and have a drink but unfortunately the wifi was barely working in the whole park so at 8:30pm we decided to head back for some dinner. Dinner was organized by us tonight and I had some sardines in a spices sause, with salad (including a freshhly picked avocado)and a boiled egg - just so happening to be one of the best meals I have eaten in quite a while. The Mosquitos were out in force tonight and by now I have so many bites my body is reacting making sleep very difficult. With no one else in the camp and nothing else to do we called it a night.
OBSERVATIONS:
- Venezuela - real danger?
- Met Daniel (Boston USA), Met Greg (Poland)
