Today I had planned to do lots as it would be my last day in Bangkok for sometime. Unfortunately I stayed out most of the night and had to sleep in to catch up on sleep.
I finished packing and was about to head into the city when the new Couchsurfer arrived at Goys - I welcomed her, gave some directions and took her to the markets for something to eat. I went looking for a laptop battery for my friend in Koh Phangan but unfortunately couldn't find one.
Next I headed over to say goodbye to my friend Angie - we went for a late lunch and I had the Papaya Salad - which like always was amazing :)
I headed to the bus stop to catch bus to the train station from which I was to catch the overnight train to Surat Thani. Unfortunately the bus never came and the traffic was crazy - I caught another bus to the metro station which took 30 minutes and at this point I started to panic. I had to catch two more trains swap stations and catch another train. The whole thing was a nightmare and the last place in the world you can rush anywhere is Bangkok with its 12 million people. So after giving myself a coronary, bumping into 5000 Thai people and getting very moody I made it and just in the nick of time.
Note To Self: never trust public transport - the silly thing being I could have walked to the station in 40 minutes but instead took 2 hours, 1 bus, 3 trains and 2km of scrambling.
This kind of thing always happens - it sucks but it is a factor of travel and I welcome it with a smile at the end!
Ko Samui and Ko Phangan hear I come.
First impressions of the train are ok but finding my 3rd class carriage quickly dampens the mood. Bench seats for two facing two others with no leg space and windows all jammed open. The train took off and my carriage was only half full. Unfortunately with two more stops it was full and I would be in for a sleepless night. Trying every possible angle, direction and coordinated move I found it impossible to get comfortable and to be honest didn't feel safe falling a sleep with my bag next to me as my carriage was full of shady looking characters.
