Today is my first day volunteering at May Ling Elementary & Highschool so naturally I barely sleapt and was up at 5am ready to go. We headed to the school at about 7:30am and started with a walk around and meeting various staff members and the kids. The primary students English level is quite low with the exception of a few students and likewise for the Highschool students. I met all the English Teachers and offered to come talk to students. First class was awsome kids had 100s of questions about the world (translated by teacher)- it is also very common here to give gifts so the students gave me loads of gifts from skipping ropes to head massages. In the end I didn't want to leave and agreed to come back and eat some local delicacies with the students. They also all taught me one word in Mandarin that would help me out around the school. The second class was also a Highschool class however there level was much lower and teacher had to translate more. Students start school here at 7 and finish at 5pm but they only do as much work hours as Western schools - they have 15 minute play break every 45 minutes, first hour of school students clean the school - very different system but works very well. We had an assembly in the primary school and I was introduced to students. In the afternoon I joined in my Host Dylan's Physical Education class and had a blast playing baseball with the kids. It was a long day at school but great fun, I will take Tuesday off and then have classes Wed/Thurs/Friday so will do some planning and see if I can create some activities where students might improve their English. In the evening I cooked a typical Australian omelette along side a simple salad - so nice not to be eating oil drenched food!
