Elly's Place!! Today I am off to the local Couchsurfing Ambassador: Elly's house. At around 11:30 CJ came back from his job and let me out of his house and I made my way towards the central market. It was good staying with CJ but we are very different people in that he likes late night partying and spending money where as I prefer early mornings and meeting locals. As I had all my things today I stood out a lot more and it was far more obvious I was a tourist. I went to my Iguana guy and asked again if he had procured for me some iguana - unfortunately the answer was no but he gave me another place to go and ask. The next place I went I met a very nice guy who said if I wanted to put in order he could get me some iguana and tommorow he would be serving tortoise which might be interesting to try. I continued my walk through the market buying a few bits and pieces, changing some dollars and then heading to the bus stop. At the bus stop I found the bus I needed to take in order to get to Ellys and I was off. After about 40 minutes the driver was very kind and directed me where I needed to get off and walk to. I arrived and met the lovely and outgoing Elly who is a local Surinamese lady that works as a teacher here in Paramaribo. Elly's house is a madhouse with people coming and going at all times, kids running around - feels like I am in the heart of Africa. We hung-out and chatted and I observed Elly and her two sisters as they screamed, yelled, laughed and made fun of the skinny white boy in their living room. I went for a walk around Ellys neighborhood and picked up some vegetables for dinner and couldn't help but notice how the prices were far cheaper out here. I certainly got some looks as I walked around but its something I am very used to now. The rest of the evening I sat and got eaten alive by 100s of Mosquitos whilst trying to watch a film over all the yelling and screaming. With all the madness there is a nice feeling at Ellys that everyone is welcome and comes and goes as they please. For dinner I cooked some chicken and stir-fry vegetables in some peanut sause I had brought at the market and the result was absolutely amazing and I will stick up on the sause before I leave Suriname. With millions of new mosquito bites, a stinking hot house and a mattress with huge springs piercing into my back there is not much chance of a good nights sleep tonight.
OBSERVATIONS:
- Ellys House - the Madhouse - people coming and going, rustic and very traditional
- Indian peanut sause - delicious
