Where The Hell is Macapa!!! Both Cecile and Roberto had to work today so after a little sleep-in I went for a walk around the apartment and to the supermarket; amazingly the prices are even higher then in the rest of Brazil and the fruit is unbelievably expensive. After some lunch and a chat with Cecile before she headed back to work; I figured I would go for a walk to the riverside and see the famous Portuguese fort. The heat was intense and by the time I arrived I was dripping in sweat, I took a walk around the fort and took some time to observe the view from the riverside. There was a large river boat at the wharf dropping passengers off from what I imagine was the 24 hour boat journey from Belen - something if I had time I would have like to have done. I then took a walk through the city centre and just like all other Brazilian cities; clothes, electronics and various consumer good stores covered every street and corner. In the afternoon Roberto and Cecile arrived and took me to their yoga class (that they do 2 times per week). Amazingly their friend who was teaching the class could speak English and so kindly gave the class both in Portuguese and in English. The yoga was very different to what I do and so I found it very educational and motivating. We used blocks and belts to deepen stretches and the instructor helped us position our bodies correctly. the class was really enjoyable and bice because there was only 4 of us. We had planned to go to a picussion class at the cultural centre tonight but unfortunately by the time we had finished yoga the picussion class had finished. So the three of us went back to the apartment and I prepared a simple omelette and salad dinner whilst we chatted. Cecile is from France and has been living in Macapa for quite a while and Roberto is a local from Macapa. Cecile is very well travelled and it turns out we have visited many of the same places aswell as many places I haven't been yet so I was able to get a bunch of info and ideas for some upcoming adventures. Roberto on the other hand is incredibly in the know on everything in the North of Brazil and he was able to teach me a lot about Amapa, the people and the culture. I feel so comfortable and welcome at Cecile and Roberto's; and can tell the next couple of days here are going to be very special.
