Worst Road Known to Man!! And so it was- one incredibly uncomfortable night crammed in the van traveling some of the worst roads I have ever layed eyes on. We stopped every couple of hours to check the vehicle and for the driver to get pick-me ups of coke and candy. At 6am we stopped for breakfast and then boarded a car ferry that would carry us across a huge river in the middle of our path. It was here on the river ferry I met a couple from Denmark who are living and working in Lethem - they told me we had only just made half-way and the road was going to get worse from here on. This little boat with 4 old ladies selling breakfast things drove up beside us and all the people went mad buying what I imagine was cheap and very nice homemade breakfast sweets and burgers. The road did get worse and as I was very tired, still a little dizzy from sleeping pill and with some car sickness the next 6-7 hours was hell. I asked myself why Oh why do I continue to put myself through this? It's hard to explain but I just know that this is my path and this is exactly where I need to be. A few more stops, a few 1000 more holes, bumps and bad driving and we rolled into Lethem. The driver dropped everyone else off at their houses except me and when I asked why he didn't drop me off at border he responded he didn't have to and I should get taxi. I refused and asked politely 2-3 times that like everyone else I would like to be dropped off where I agreed. After unpacking the van and 45 minutes later he took me to the border. The boarder was very quiet as the football was on so the Guyanese immigration rushed me through. I met a nice guy who changed my Guyanese dollars and then tried to sell me a taxi ride 4km to brazil boarder of which I politely declined. The guy then offered to take me for free - a very kind and unexpected gesture - I am guessing he had a win with money exchange. Arriving to Brazilian immigration I was told that my visa for Brazil had expired which unbelievably it had (turns out I only have 90 days from day of entry to be in Brazil). I pleaded with immigration saying I only needed two days to transit Brazil and enter Venezuela and in the end the official stamped my passport and I was through. There were no taxis or buses leaving from boarder so I tried to hitchhike into the nearest city: Bom Fin - a very cool Rastafarian guy and his family picked ms up and drive me to the bus station where luckily there was a bus just about to leave for Boa Vist - finally I am winning. I met these two guys who helped me get ticket and I spent the whole bus ride chatting with. One of the guys tried calling Amanda; my host in Boa Vista but unfortunately couldn't get through. Arriving in Boa Vista I said goodbye to my new friends and then wondered around hoping that my host Amanda may get the mussed call and find out i have arrived and come to bus station to collect me. Amanda did call the guys back and luckily came to the bus station to collect me; when she arrived I was met with a big smile and a wonderful hug. We drove back to Amanda's place, dropped off my things and then Amanda insisted on taking me to one of her favorite places in Boa Vista. The place was a beach beside a river and it was absolutely beautiful with a nice picnic area, small resteraunt and lots of people around. I didn't think you could have a beach alongside a river but I was wrong. People were doing all kinds of water sports from wake boarding behind boats to riding their jetskis just like the actual beach back at home. It was getting late so we couldn't stay long and headed back to the house. I took the rest of the evening to relax and try and catch up on some sleep which I had missed out on lastnight.
